Renewable Energy on a Heritage Building

Can solar panels be installed on a protected church building? Yes — but it requires exceptional care and expertise.

Our latest photovoltaic system was installed on the Franciscan Monastery in Pasarét, Budapest, a well-known example of protected built heritage. This project posed unique challenges, demanding close coordination with heritage conservation authorities and the local government to ensure that the building’s architectural and cultural value was fully respected.

A key requirement was that the solar panels should remain out of sight from the street. Even when viewed from the hillside, the church roof needed to continue blending seamlessly into the varied landscape of flat and pitched rooftops.

No detail was too small: from the positioning and colour of protective conduits to the discreet routing of cabling. We also designed a connection solution that completely avoided any indoor drilling or tapping, thereby protecting the building fabric.

By carefully integrating modern renewable energy technology into this heritage-protected site, we helped ensure that this historic site can look to a sustainable future while honouring its past.
